Clipper sells “Why Slavery” Documentary Series to Tencent Video

June 14, 2018

Clipper Media Capital has sold the China rights for the Why Slavery documentary campaign to Tencent Video for exclusive distribution in the People’s Republic of China.

Why Slavery, a series of five hour-long documentaries centred around the topic of modern slavery, is being produced by prestigious Danish firm The Why Foundation, founded by former DR Head of Docs Mette Hoffman and former BBC Storyville commissioner Nick Fraser. The projects hail from celebrated filmmakers such as Academy Award winner Roger Ross Williams (LIFE, ANIMATED) and famed lawyer Phillipe Sands (author of bestselling non-fiction book EAST WEST STREET).

Tencent Video is one of China's leading streaming platforms, boasting well over 65m subscribers, and is owned by Tencent, China's largest company.

The series will launch globally on October 18th on broadcasters such as the BBC – where it will air under the Storyville banner – as well as CNN, NHK, PBS, DR, SVT and many others around the world. Tencent’s acquisition of the project puts the series reach at over 1bn people around the world.

The sale comes on the eve of the kick-off of the Shanghai Film Festival, where Clipper will launch a slate of scripted projects originating with Western writers and aimed at the Chinese market. On the film side, these include a UK-China co-production rom-com with Shanghai Film Group, a France-China action-comedy alongside legendary French producer Thierry Ardisson and several sci-fi properties with Hollywood and Chinese studio support. On the TV side, Clipper will announce a slate of returnable Chinese TV projects with Western showrunners attached, as well as a major entertainment series alongside the UK’s October Films.

Clipper continues to represent Western content for sale and pre-sale in China for major European distributors such as Banijay as well as independent producers like The Why Foundation.

On the English language side, Clipper has television projects in development with international talent like John David Coles (HOUSE OF CARDS), David Leland (THE BORGIAS, BAND OF BROTHERS) and Stuart Urban (THE SECRET). Film projects boast collaborators like Will Conroy (TRANSSIBERIAN), Guillem Morales (THE MINIATURIST, JULIA’S EYES) and Gwyneth Hughes (THE GIRL).
